The During The Reconstruction Era - 989 Words

During the Reconstruction era which occurred after the Civil War there was animosity between the states as well as the debate over how freed slaves should be dealt with in terms of becoming citizens with the same rights as the Constitution provided for whites. The government had to come up some type of conditions which would attempt to allow the rebellious southern states back into the union. During this time period President Abraham Lincoln appointed provisional military governors to oversee the re-establishment of the southern states into the union as well as a functioning government. Yet, during the late 1800’s the Republicans ruled Congress and made efforts during the Reconstruction end to ensure that everyone had the same equal rights by passing the Civil Rights Bill to ensure that everyone had equal rights. This also led to questions as to what to do with the recently freed blacks. The main problem was with the Southern states and getting them to except black, so the gov ernment implemented laws and Constitutional Amendments which helped the federal government with the enforcement of equal rights which would give blacks in the south the rights to hold office and vote. This leads us to the freeman’s Bureau which was also a part of the Reconstruction Act. The Reconstruction act of 1867 required southern states to except and ratify the 14th Amendment granting equal protection for the freed blacks, and the 15th Amendment guaranteed the right for blacks to vote.
